MRT 2.1.4.x Global Interactive Experience Innovation

Remaining problems:

We know that MRT(our name comes from Maxtor Repair Tool) just started several years ago and experienced years’ of growth. At that early stage, due to the lack of human resources and capital, a single engineer might have to be in charge of multiple duties at times,such as research;tech articles;advertisement;training stuff.

It is of great difficulty for a team of merely several engineers working in a relatively tough developing environment to survive in DR market.We,therefore,have to make great efforts to be recognized by the market.

As for software, the interface and function layout were not well designed in terms of conformity, so there are still lots of parts remaining immature. Furthermore, some function were not well maintained and exploited further in time due to the shortage of human resources and personnel transfer.

The existing development tasks are arduous, the new employee must experience a long training period, and a large amount of basic work needs to be invested. Meanwhile, Some functions are not unified and some functional adaptability gradually becomes unable to meet users’ needs over time.
For example, the icon style is completely not integrated, the term translation is not uniform and professional, the layout is unreasonable, the function entry is complicated, and the old functions are not improved properly. As a result, the version 2.1.3.0 still has a lot of inadequacy and incomplete specialization, causing certain obstacles in use.
The goals of MRT in the initial stage:

In the initial stage, we should “solve the problem of survival”. Goal can not be achieved without basic survival.  

Keywords: “Yes” and “No”

What MRT needs to do at this stage is to exist in the market, existence means “Yes” while failure leads to “No”.
The goals of MRT in the previous stage:

“Providing sufficient material needs” aims at developing more advanced technology to create more and wider business space for users after the survival needs are met.

Keywords: “More” and “Less”.

After the difficult stage of exploration and hardship, MRT finally stood firm and the training related matters gradually began to be implemented. In order to make the product brand bigger and stronger, under the leadership of Mr.Chen, we have established the principle of “the R&D of technology is core competitiveness”. Since then, MRT began to transform and took technology R&D as the top priority, and the name of the MRT firmware lab has been established. After years of deep cultivation, MRT has gradually overcame the function shortcomings and developed a lot of new functions and technologies. In 2016, MRT created a significant independent research and development technology – Seagate Virtual Start. At present, it has become a very powerful and symbolic key feature in Seagate repair field!
In the first half of 2019, in order to cope with sector access interruption caused by human operation, we added two important functions to adapt to more disks to deal with one of the most complicated faults in history. Of course, this feature will continue to improve its adaptability with newly released Seagate firmware version. In line with the principle of users’ data first, we suggest that do not rebuild the translator without backup, otherwise it may bring great difficulty to the subsequent repair, and even make it impossible to recover key data most of time.
After the version 2.1.3.0, we began to focus on the study SSD, and try hard to develop more practical features to help users recover data.

 

The goals of MRT in the current stage

We have solved the basic problems of functions, the next urgent task falls MRT is to “meet diversified needs and spiritual needs”, which means to increase exclusive features and improve user experience!

MRT data recovery software has survived through the most difficult time. Now top-level issues are no longer just about the availability of technology, but also the diversity of functions and the user experience. What we pursue is not just user available but user friendly.

To attract users with an excellent software, we must develop products from the user’s perspective, meet the user’s needs, as well as actively adjust and optimize products to fit different user habits. To develop MRT software, we must be able to master cutting edge technology and design user friendly software.

However, the needs of users are ever-changing, and many features are no longer applicable. During the meeting, we analyze and evaluate the collected user’s advice and available features. For example, whether to delete the old function, whether to add the suggested function, and in which form to add the function, whether it is meaningful, all of which need to be evaluated.

At this time, MRT will achieve a record high upgrade, the most significant and strategic version 2.1.4.x. At this time, except for upgrading some important functions, we have made great efforts to optimize user experience related problems from all sides, such as adding and integrating icon styles (Designing a set of new icons in line with a shared graphic pattern), unifying function paths, simplifying function layout, optimizing interface interaction logic, and comprehensively improving the daily operation experience.

Several principles for optimizing the experience:

  • Efficiency . When we develop a function, the first thing we need to consider is how to make it easy for the user to find the function immediately, instead of searching one by one in all functions, which must be very painful and time consuming.

In order to save retrieval and operation time, we have made adjustments to various important functional utilities, including redesign of Utility interface of Seagate and Western Digital which contains a vast amount of functions. The function access is unified, the classification of each menu bar adjusted, the new specialized classification description added, and each sub-function is classified by usage. Besides, some old features that are no longer able to meet the usage requirements are removed.Shortcut buttons for key functions and frequently used functions are added, and some third-level layout are reduced.

  • Visual effects.The icon problem is particularly annoying, because it is not professional with a series of contradictory and chaotic designs in relation to color and graphic pattern . In addition, the function is complicated and unplanned, the layout is unorganized, it is hard for customers to remember the specific location of a feature.

The new version of the icon system has been upgraded to a new unified version. The style of the icon is roughly divided into: the materialized icons, the mechanism-oriented icons, and the reserved icons.

The materialized icons is to depict the function based on its description, and try to present a materialized image to facilitate understanding. For example, some folder-related icons use an intuitive materialized image.

The mechanism-oriented icons displays the function in a form in relation to the mechanism of the function, because such icons have no specific reference objects, and the meaning is more abstract. Therefore, a figure based on its mechanism is easier to understand for those who are familiar with the relevant knowledge.

The reserved icon is a set of original icons simply redesigned to fit with new pattern style so as to familiarize users with the new version more quickly.

  • User experience. Improving the user experience should reduce the user’s operating frequency, reduce the waiting time for the program, and optimize the function usage logic.

This upgrade optimized the window interface display of common functions and the convenience of serial port. Interface optimization includes: optimizing text description; quicker response for canceling serial port related tasks; optimizing serial port stability; adding shortcut icons for different read/write modes according to the characteristics of the Seagate hard disk; simplifying the use of logic for common functions .

The above adjustments make the function layout and classification more clear, which can greatly improve the hands-on experience.

  • Standardization and specialization. Corrected and unified function descriptions in English along with redesign of icons.

There are many problems in the software: multiple descriptions for the same function, along with ambiguous meaning, spelling errors, and grammatical problems.

The new icon is designed with red, green and gray as the theme. There are three states for the same icon which indicates different states for the function.

Preparations for software upgrades:

Remake user manuals, beginner tutorials, key feature tutorials, and technical documentation

We clearly understand the difficulties of new users: The MRT user manual is relatively out-dated; there are many tutorials but users don’t know where to start; users lack basic theory and do not know how to systematically learn; the software is rich in functions but users do not know the occasion in which those functions can be applied.

We will spend some time to organize and update the tutorials to improve this section with a more professional attitude.

The specific plan will be divided into three parts:

  1. Basic function tutorials to demonstrate how to use common functions.
  2. Advanced documentation, technical documentation on difficult faults, tutorial demonstration of key functions, explanation of important functions, etc.
  3. Training course,a paid service, which systematically illustrates theoretical knowledge and data recovery skills.

After the new version is released, MRT will hold a training meeting in China. Please pay attention to the official news about the specific programs and contents!
